| Alexandr Nizov went 5-for-5 with four RBIs, helping the Army club win its fourth straight game, 13-4 over Moskvich at Balashikha.
Nizov, the second VVIA player in a week to register eight consecutive hits (see report on VVIA's previous game), raised his batting average to a league-leading .655. Yury Zhirov (3-0) hurled five shutout innings to become the season's first three-game winner. The right-hander gave up consecutive singles to Andrei Sazonov and Oleg Korneev in each of the 2nd and 4th innings, but nothing else. He leads the RL with a sterling 0.56 ERA, 24 strikeouts and .161 opponents batting average. The only other pitcher to hold opposition below .200 is Vladimir Petrov. Nevertheless, the three time ERA champ has allowed an ugly total of 21 runs in 13 2/3 innings, walking 17 and hitting four batters with a pitch. The fact that almost half of those runs - ten - were unearned is of little consolation. The left-hander was into the Mark Wohlers' stuff again coming out from the bullpen in the 6th inning - 17 of his first 20 pitches were balls - as he surrendered four quick runs. But after VVIA scored six times in the bottom of the inning to make it 13-4, Petrov got Moskvich batters swinging on his sweeping curve ball and finished with nine strikeouts in four innings. An upcoming two-game clash with the first-place SKV next weekend should give an answer whether he's shaken the troubles off. |
