| VVIA's designated hitter Maxim Yudaev got his record-breaking 51st hit of the year on the final day of the season, but lost out the batting title .563 to .560 to teammate Alexandr Nizov, who joined Iosif Gogishvili as the RL's only Triple Crown hitters. Nizov edged fellow VVIA's Alexandr Fedorov by one homer and two RBIs for the league lead.
Yudaev, hitting leadoff for the first time this season, walked on four pitches in the 1st and was robbed of a hit in the 2nd, when center fielder Oleg Korneev, making an odd start at the position, made a spectacular running catch in deep left center. But Yudaev finally moved past Evgeny Puchkov for the most hits in a season, when he lined an 0-1 Dmitri Likhin's pitch up the middle for a single in the 3rd inning. Nizov, 2-for-2 up to the moment with a run-scoring ground-rule double and a bunt single, got his 3rd hit of the game on a grounder that leaked through the left side of the infield for an RBI single. The hit proved to be deciding in the batting race as Nizov flied out in his last two at-bats and Yudaev grounded out to second and was hit by Andrei Anashkin's pitch. Nizov, who spent two previous summers as a backup second baseman with the Butte Copper Kings in the Pioneer League, won the Triple Crown honors with a RL-record .563 batting average (49-for-87), 4 homers, and 48 RBIs (another record) in 22 games. He also set single-season marks with 53 runs scored and 39 stolen bases. Alexandr Vashakidze hit a two-run homer off Likhin and Evgeny Belousov added a three-run shot against Anashkin, powering VVIA's 13 consecutive knockout victory. The Army club concluded the 1999 campaign with a .431 batting average, first team in Russian League history to reach the .400 plateau. |
