| Maxim Yudaev became only the third Russian Leaguer to get 40 hits in a season and first since Iosif Gogishvili had 44 with the Yaroslavl Bears in 1996 as the Army juggernaut won its 14th straight, posting eight knockout win in a row.
Yudaev went 3-for-5 to raise his league-leading average to .569. His 41 hits are only nine shy of Evgeny Puchkov's single-season record of 50. VVIA has six games remaining. Alexandr Nizov's five steals gave him 27 for the season, tying his career high. He stole a then record 27 bases in 1995. MGU 78ers' speedster Vladimir Timakov swiped 35 bags in 1997. VVIA's Vladimir Petrov (2-2) gave up one run on four hits in six innings, walking none and striking out eight. The ace left-hander has returned to his usual self after a horrible May, when he had a 0-2 record with a 7.24 ERA. He's 2-0 with 29 strikeouts, only five walks and 1.06 ERA in 17 innings in five games in June and July. Petrov retired 15 of the first 16 batters before playing coach Leonid Korneev doubled leading off the 6th and scored two outs later on Andrei Kripochin's single. Dmitri Likhin then got his first hit upon return from the Czech Republic to put men on first and third, but Petrov retired Andrei Sazonov on a comebacker. Moskvich starter Korneev (0-1) surrendered 17 runs - 10 earned - on 14 hits and seven walks. The former Red Devils' ace, who had 15 wins against only one loss in regular season play in 1992-96, lowered his career record to 16-3. He went 1-1 last year with RusStar. |
