| In Balashikha, Spartak used some timely hitting and pitching to beat RusStar 10-6, snapping a three-game losing streak. Left fielder Mikhail Kornev had his first three hits of the season and stole three bases as Spartak thrived in the clutch, going 7-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Kornev set stage for a 7-run second inning, when, having fallen behind 0-2 in the count against loser Ilia Sorokin (1-2), he fought off a one-out line-drive single. After Igor Lyulchak walked and Roman Russu flied out, Kornev and Lyulchak executed a double steal and scored on Stanislav Shevelev's double to right. Valery Platonov smashed a three-run double to make it 6-0 later in the inning. RusStar's rallied against reliever Shevelev in the top of the 7th, but Alexei Shiroky (4-0) got Spartak out of a bases-loaded one-out jam, allowing only one of the three inherited runners to score. The right-hander, who pitched eight no-hit innings in the Spartak's previous game, finally surrendered a base hit, when Mikhail Klimov lined a pitch in front of the right fielder with one out in the 8th. Andrei Sergienkov then grounded into an inning-ending double play. Shiroky tripled in a run and scored in the bottom of the inning to add two insurance runs before pitching a 1-2-3 ninth to end the game. |
