| In Balashikha, Alexandr Nizov homered with the bases full and drove in five runs as VVIA won its eighth straight, improving to 3-1 against Spartak this season.
The Army club hit Spartak's ace Anton Shiroky (2-3) even harder then on Saturday, when he was removed after throwing 56 pitches in two innings. This time, he was battered for 14 runs on 14 hits, including five doubles, despite being ahead of the batters most of the day. VVIA went 6-for-9 with 3 bases on balls with two strikes in the count against Shiroky. The right-hander gave way to his younger brother with two men on and two out in the 4th, before Alexei Shiroky loaded the bases with a walk and was greeted with the Nizov's grand slam to straight-away center field. Vladimir Petrov (1-2) struck out six in three innings of relief for the victory, becoming the first Russian Leaguer to win 25 games. He is 25-5 in his seven-year career, all in the Army club uniform. Having an uncharacteristically high 5.79 ERA due to a serious problem with his control earlier in the season, Petrov, nevertheless, leads the league with the lowest opponents batting average of .188. |
