| Right-hander Andrei Bogatyrev (1-0) limited Spartak to just three hits in eight innings as the league-leading SKV won its fourth game in a row, spoiling the anticipated return of Anton Shiroky (0-1). With a record of 5-1, SKV is one game ahead of the second-place VVIA.
Bogatyrev, who retired ten straight batters in one stretch, faced four batters over the minimum, giving up only one unearned run. Trailing 1-0 after three innings, SKV exploded for five runs in the 4th. After Ilia Bogatyrev drew a full-count walk with one out and Dmitri Golubev's ground rule double over the left field wall - SKV's first hit off Shiroky - put runners on second and third, Andrei Tzelykovsky hit a two-run opposite field single through the right side of the infield. Alexei Golubev followed with an RBI double to left, before SKV brought home two more runs on a throwing error by shortstop Valery Platonov, his fifth in the two-game series, and a ground out. SKV scored single runs in each of the next three innings on two Dmitri Golubev's RBI singles and Sergei Iljin's one-run double. Andrei Protasov singled in another two with two outs in the eight against reliever Alexei Rzhevsky to make it 10-1. Shiroky, making his first appearance of the season after rehabbing an injured knee, allowed eight runs (six of them earned) on ten hits in his first game in Spartak uniform since 1996. Spartak had runners on first and second with nobody out in the first inning, but catcher Alexei Golubev picked Roman Russu off second base. One out later, Alexandr Myaskov gave Spartak a 1-0 lead, scoring on a steal and two extra-base errors. Aside from third baseman Oleg Semenov's 5-for-7 performance in the series, Spartak offensive woes continued. The team's batting average still hovers near the Mendoza line, currently at .225. Spartak pinch-hitters, meanwhile, remain hitless - 0-for-10 for the season. |
