| Spartak tied the score with two outs in the ninth on Valery Platonov's two-run bases-loaded single off Yury Zhirov and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by VVIA's catcher Evgeny Belousov to upset the Army club 6-5 at the frozen SKA-29 stadium.
Trailing 5-2 before its last at-bat, Spartak got a leadoff man on base, when struggling with his control Vladimir Petrov (0-2) hit Pavel Geraskin on a 1-2 pitch. After Roman Russu sacrificed, Stanislav Shevelev singled Geraskin home to make it 5-3. Alexandr Myaskov singled and Sergei Solovjev walked on the full count to chase Petrov. With the bases loaded and one out, Zhirov took over the mound and struck out pinch-hitter Anatoly Medvedev on three pitches (ironically, four Spartak substitute hitters went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in the game). But Spartak didn't care much about the strikeout as they had Valery Platonov batting next. Platonov, 1-for-4 with one RBI up to the moment, then hit a screaming liner towards Yury Perepelitza, that just eluded the third baseman's outstretched glove. With men on first and second and pitcher Alexei Shiroky (1-0) at bat, Spartak pulled out a double steal and the front runner Solovjev scored what proved to be the winning run, when Belousov's throw to third base sailed into the outfield. VVIA built a 5-run lead in the first inning, but seemed literally frozen the rest of the game in an unbelievably cold weather. Temperature at game time was not above 4 C (40 F). Spartak helped the cause by turning three double plays, including 9th inning twin killing, when Platonov scooped up Perepelitza's grounder, touched the second base for the force and threw the ball on to first to end the game. |
