| After a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of SKV a day earlier, VVIA came back with a 25-9 revenge on a chilly Sunday morning at the MGU stadium.
Trailing 3-0, VVIA put seven runs across the plate in the top of the 3rd inning with German Panyushov's two run double giving the Army ballclub the lead for good. VVIA scored 11 more times in the 4th on only three hits against SKV's starter Dmitri Lukin (0-1) and three relievers. Once again VVIA did not get a solid performance from its starting pitcher as Nikolai Petrov could not get out of the fifth inning. Yury Zhirov (1-0) pitched 2 and 2/3 of an inning for his first victory of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.08. Overall, VVIA hurlers yielded a terrible 9.56 earned run average in two opening games. VVIA's Evgeny Belousov, former outfielder who was converted to catching just before this season to fill the void left by departures of Andrei Selivanov and Roman Golubikhin, nailed five of the 14 SKV runners trying to steal over the two games. He had his share of passed balls though. Alexandr Nizov led VVIA attack in the series, going 5-for-8 with two doubles and two triples, but struggled defensively. Normally a second baseman the last two years in North American pro ball, he committed three errors at shortstop on Saturday and added two more while playing third base on Sunday. |
