| Andrei Polstyanov (2-0) cruised through five innings to lower his league-leading ERA to 1.93 as the Army Club beat RusStar 16-6.
The tall right-hander gave up two hits and three walks, striking out three. The only run against him came on Andrei Gavrilov's two-out bloop double in the fifth, which allowed Andrei Muratov to score all the way from first base. Polstyanov moved within one win of a career victory number 20. The only pitcher to have reached the plateau is another CSKA hurler Vladimir Petrov, who has a 21-3 record (Russian Series performance doesn't count here). CSKA built a five-run lead in the first inning on five consecutive hits off loser Oleg Korneev (0-3), capped by a two-run triple by Yury Perepelitza. The Army clean-up trio, Dmitry Lukin, Ruslan Nabiev, and Andrei Selivanov, went 10-for-12 with three doubles and three triples, scoring nine and driving in seven runs, to pace the 16-hit attack. RusStar's Andrei Sazonov improved his league-best RBI total to 24, going 3-for-4 with his ninth double of the year. The right-hand hitting catcher, only in his second full RL campaign, threatens to break Evgeny Puckov's single season marks for doubles (13) and RBIs (35), both set in 1995 with the Moscow Red Devils. 16-year-old Sazonov, with 26 hits in 11 games ( .542 average, 11-game hitting streak) and 10 games remaining, might also challenge the ultimate 1995 Puchkov's feat of 50 base hits in a season. |
