| A five-run first inning got Budo off to a quick start against left-hander Nikolos Bezhuashvili as the Japanese team hammered MGU-78 18-1.
After Hisao Matsueda led off the inning with a walk and Naoki Sakagami singled to right, first baseman Hideki Kasai hit a two-run triple to left. Kazuya Mutoh drove Kasai home with a single to center and scored, when Tomoyoshi Urano hit another triple to right. A walk and a groundout later, Masashi Kawaguchi capped the inning with an RBI groundout to shortstop. Kasai, 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs in the game, finished the tournament with the team's leading .467 average (7-for-15). Budo's defense turned three double plays to help carry the shutout into the seventh inning, but MGU scored a run against Daiju Nogawa, Budo's third pitcher of the day. Soso Gogishvili, the Russian League's only Triple Crown winner (while playing for the Yaroslavl Bears in 1996), got a leadoff infield single to second and moved to third on Ruslan Nabiev's base hit to right. With Maxim Yudaev at the plate, catcher Tatsuya Ishizuka committed a passed ball allowing Gogishvili to score. Reliever Taisuke Matsubara pitched two scoreless frames for the victory. |
