| Leadoff hitter Yuichi Fujimoto scored 4 and drove in 3 runs, leading Soka past MGU-78 12-0. The left fielder finished the game with 2 walks, a single, a three-run inside-the-park homer, and five stolen bases. He also made a spectacular running catch on a Nikolos Bezhuashvili's foul fly, nearly crashing into the wall.
Soka starter Mikio Tanahashi pitched a 3-hit ball over five innings for the victory, he didn't allow anybody past first base. Relievers Katuhiro Shimizu and Satoru Inaba closed out the shutout. Soka scored five runs off Alexei Valyalin in the first inning , highlighted by two-run singles by Masato Ohguchi and Masaki Yamazaki. The only bright spot for the MGU 78ers were two scoreless innings by reliever Gennady Ardzhevanidze. The veteran right-hander, who owns the all-time Russian League career mark with 231 1/3 innings pitched (229 strikeouts), proved that his last solid RL outing against RusStar was no fluke. Ardzhevanidze has been a hard-luck story since 1992, compiling a 9-22 record with 6.65 ERA. |
