| Second baseman Nobuyoshi Yamada hit a two-out two-run triple in the first inning as Tokai defeated Budo 2-0.
With one out, Kazushige Kudoh and Hirofumi Itoh singled to put men on first and second. Budo's starter Yukinori Ishibashi fanned Tsuyoshi Sudo, before yielding the three-bagger to left. Budo's best scoring chance came in the fourth inning when Hideharu Nonaka surrendered a leadoff double to Hideki Kasai and hit Kazuya Mutoh with a pitch. The following batter, Tomoyoshi Urano, moved runners over with a groundout to shortstop. But Yasuhiro Koshikawa and Gosei Yamamoto couldn't put anything across the plate with a groundout and a called strikeout. Left-handed reliever Shigeo Inamine replaced Nonaka in the following frame and allowed just one base runner over the next five innings, earning the victory. Inamine retired 10 consecutive batters, before giving up a single to Kasai with one out in the 9th. But the pitcher retired Mutoh and Urano on groundouts to preserve the shutout. Budo's left-hander Ishibashi pitched an eight-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a losing effort. |
